Using it day to day: practical tips

Towing a caravan, running heated seats and charging phones all lean on the battery of cars and vans. Some recent models want the new battery registered through the diagnostic socket, so check the handbook. Buying by price alone and ignoring the size of the tray leads to a battery that will not sit flat.

Before you order: a quick checklist

✓ Dimensions to compare: 236 × 127 × 225 mm. Do not forget the base ledge, which the hold-down clamp grips on many vehicles.
✓ Capacity is 45Ah. Aim for the same figure as your old battery or slightly above, never much lower.

Questions and answers

Can a battery be stored before use?

Yes, but all batteries self-discharge slowly. Check the voltage every few months and recharge if needed.

Can you give me the size and weight of this battery?

Overall it is 236 × 127 × 225 mm (L × W × H) and tips the scales at 9 kg. Weight is a good clue to how much active material is inside.

What voltage and amp-hours does this model have?

Yes, if they are identical. Two 12V units of 45Ah in series give double the voltage; in parallel they give double the capacity at 12V.

Is the Long 46B24R-MF part of a wider range?

It comes from Starting Series. Other sizes in that series share its construction.
