Chargers

Choosing a charger

Voltage comes first: 6, 12 or 24 volts, or a unit that switches between them. Then match the charging current to the size of the battery. A few amps suit small batteries and long-term maintenance, while large batteries need more to refill in a sensible time.

Features worth paying attention to

• Automatic multi-stage charging that reads the battery and adapts.
• Separate programmes for AGM, gel and lithium.
• A float or maintenance setting for vehicles laid up for months.
• Protection against reversed clamps and short circuits.

Quick answers

All winter on the charger, is that safe?

With a smart unit that has a maintenance setting, yes. It drops to a gentle float and only tops up when needed.

Why test before buying a new battery?

A tired alternator or a hidden drain can mimic a dying battery. For engines that will not crank because the battery is flat, see Jump Starters. Charger brands include NOCO, Absaar and Motobatt.
