Using it day to day: practical tips

An off-grid workshop with power tools pulls big currents for brief moments. Keep a logbook of monthly readings. Sitting partly charged for weeks lets sulphation take hold in lead batteries.

AGM: how it works

Nothing sloshes around in a glass-mat battery, because every drop of acid is held in the separators. Cars with automatic engine stop love AGM, since it copes with constant partial discharge. Replace an AGM battery whose case has bulged.

Check before ordering

• ✓ Stored energy reserve: 200Ah. Going much lower than your current battery can leave you short on cold mornings or long stops.
• ✓ Terminal check: 5, 6, 15. Spade widths and post diameters vary, so match the type exactly.
• ✓ This reference uses AGM. If your current battery has a different technology printed on it, find out why before switching.
