Measurements, ratings and codes

Using it day to day: practical tips

A quad on a farm sits in the shed for days, then has to start first time on a cold morning. Connect the positive lead first, then the negative. A starter that clicks but will not turn is the usual sign of a flat or worn battery.

How gel batteries work and how to look after them

Gel cells contain no free liquid that could spill. Solar cabins rely on gel for long, steady cycling. Program solar regulators with the gel values published by the maker.

Will the Motobatt MTX5AL fit?

• ✓ 5Ah sets how long the battery can power things with the engine off.
• ✓ Diesel engine? Its starting demand is high, so check that 85A covers what the maker recommends.
• ✓ Check that the alternator or controller suits gel.
